У продаваемых сегодня Blu-ray дисков максимум всего четыре слоя, а емкость не более 50 Гб.<br /><br />TDK удалось создать 16 слоев за счет использования материала с высоким коэффициентом пропускания света. В частности, коэффициент пропускания света одного слоя 95,1%, а 16 слоев 72,6%. Такой материал уже используется при производстве части обычных дисков. Для записи и воспроизведения нового диска используется такой же луч, как и в обычных Blu-ray приводах, с апертурой 0,85, так что есть надежда получить совместимые системы. Время, затрачиваемое на чтение одного слоя такое же, как и у существующих Blu-ray систем.<br /><br />Согласно спецификации Blu-Ray дисков, толщина записывающего слоя должна быть 100 мкм или меньше, но записывающий слой нового диска  пока имеет толщину в 260 мкм. И это вызывает аберрации оптических линз.<br /><br /><br /><br />
