Для укладки органического материала на подложку инженеры предложили использовать метод втравливания (ink jet), основанный на собственной технологии Micro Piezo, используемой в струйных принтерах. <br /><br />Разработчики утверждают, что современная технология вакуумно-термального выпаривания не позволяет поставить производство больших панелей на поток. В то время как предложенная ими технология для этого вполне пригодна. Метод, разработанный инженерами Epson, может использоваться для массового производства OLED-панелей с диагональю от 37 дюймов с физическим разрешением 1920 x 1080 пикселей. <br /><br />Технологию планируется представить в США на конференции SID 2009, которая пройдет в Сан-Антонио, Техас, в начале июня 2009 г. Компания представит 14-дюймовый светодиодный экран с разрешающей способностью, эквивалентной 37-дюймовым панелям формата Full HD. Пробное производство планируется начать в 2012 г. И еще три года потребуется для выхода на коммерческий объем. Таким образом, первые OLED-панели, изготовленные с применением технологии Epson, могут появиться на рынке только 2015 г. <br /><br />По мнению экспертов, технология светоизлучающих диодов является наиболее вероятной кандидатурой на замену ЖК и плазмы. По сравнению с двумя последними, она предлагает ряд преимуществ. Во-первых, диоды светятся сами и не требуют фоновой подсветки. Это позволяет делать телевизоры более тонкими. Во-вторых, светодиод менее инертен, что позволяет более четко отображать динамичные сцены по сравнению с ЖК. В-третьих, светодиоды способны обеспечивать более качественную цветопередачу. Наконец, светодиодные панели потребляют меньше энергии – на фоне государственных инициатив по сокращению электрической мощности домашней электроники данная особенность является очень важной. <br /><br />По словам аналитиков, главной помехой для распространения OLED-дисплеев являются высокие производственные издержки. Чтобы производство OLED-ТВ было рентабельным, их нужно изготавливать не менее чем по 3 млн штук в год. По этой причине в ближайшее десятилетие телевизоры с данной технологией не смогут вытеснить с рынка другие устройства отображения. Пока же технология используется, в основном, в портативных устройствах. <br /><br />Первый в мире светодиодный телевизор поступил в продажу в Японии 1 декабря 2007. по цене, эквивалентной $1,7 тыс. Его выпустила корпорация Sony. Телевизор имеет диагональ экрана 11 дюймов. В Европе этот телевизор появился позже. Его стоимость здесь составляет около $5 тыс. Собственные телевизоры на базе OLED планируют выпустить LG (2009 г.), Samsung (2010 г.), Panasonic и Toshiba (2010-2011 гг). Ожидается, что в 2013 г. будет продано 2,8 млн OLED-ТВ (по данным iSuppli от 2007 г.). <br />
