В отличие от Toshiba, другие производители лэптопов высшего ценового сегмента стараются включить в них привод данного формата де-факто или, в крайнем случае, предложить его хотя бы как опцию. По словам официальных представителей Toshiba, формат нового поколения Blu-ray является всего лишь очередным носителем информации, в то время как для просмотра фильмов высокой четкости он вовсе не обязателен. <br /><br />Компания Toshiba являлась крупнейшим инвестором в технологию HD DVD, однако в феврале этого года отказалась от дальнейшей поддержки этого формата, сочтя его бесперспективным после того, как он него отказалась одна из крупнейших киностудий - Warner Brothers. Президент компании Ацутоси Нисида (Atsutoshi Nishida) сообщил, что в ближайшем будущем Toshiba не собирается использовать технологию Blu-ray, разработанную главным противником Toshiba в войне форматов, японской корпорацией Sony. Позже появилась весьма любопытная информация о том, что компания Toshiba разрабатывает новый DVD-плеер, который позволит смотреть фильмы с обычным разрешением в формате Full HD. Технология, способная преобразовывать низкое разрешение в высокое, была разработана уже давно, поэтому возникал вопрос, что нового в этой области смогла придумать Toshiba. <br /><br />Как выяснилось, главным оружием против Sony с ее все более популярным Blu-ray является новый четырехъядерный процессор Toshiba Quad-Core HD, базирующийся на архитектуре Cell. Данный процессор, судя по всему, и ляжет в основу будущего плеера. Процессор способен преобразовывать стандартное разрешение в полное разрешение высокой четкости 1920 x 1080p, как заявляют источники, без ухудшения качества картинки. В компании полагают, что данное решение окажется вполне конкурентоспособным по двум причинам: во-первых, плеер с таким процессором будет стоить дешевле плееров Blu-ray, во-вторых, пользователям такого плеера будет доступно гораздо большее число фильмов, так как устройство сможет проигрывать фильм в разрешении HD с любого DVD-диска. Наконец, диски формата DVD стоят в несколько раз дешевле дисков формата Blu-ray. Плеер планируется выпустить в 2008 г.<br />
