Формат Blu-ray, предложенный Sony, смог завоевать признание большинства голливудских студий, что вынудило компанию Toshiba, разработавшую альтернативный формат HD DVD, отказаться от продолжения и без того затянувшегося противостояния. <br /><br />Казалось, победа пришла вовремя — замедление продаж DVD как раз начало беспокоить правообладателей. Однако, похоже, момент все-таки был упущен. Признание новой технологии требует времени, а его у победившего Blu-ray не оказалось. Внимание потребителей уже начало переключаться на другие возможности, в частности, на сервисы по загрузке цифровых материалов, открытые Apple, Netflix и Amazon.com. Ситуация складывается так, что Blu-ray может уйти на свалку истории, не успев завоевать признания публики. «Мы видим, как окно возможностей для Blu-ray быстро закрывается, — так характеризует положение дел Джагдиш Ребелло (Jagdish Rebello), ведущий аналитик iSuppli. — Вопрос стоит так: имеет ли Blu-ray вообще значение?» <br /><br />Конечно, пока рано полностью списывать Blu-ray со счетов. Хотя исследователи компании NPD Group сообщили о снижении продаж в январе на 40%, Sony и ее сторонники указывают на недостаток проигрывателей в розничной сети, как на основную причину. Ожидается, что увеличение производства поможет исправить ситуацию. Некоторым подтверждением этой сентенции является увеличение продаж на 2% в феврале, когда проигрывателей стало несколько больше. Между тем, данные за апрель, опубликованные Sanford C. Bernstein & Co., свидетельствуют, что продажи дисков нового формата увеличат общий объем рынка за год всего лишь на 1%. <br /><br />Реальными причинами того, что Blu-ray буксует на месте, аналитики считают высокие цены, как на оборудование, так и на диски. Кроме того, продвижению нового формата мешает то, что, по сути, он является развитием предшествующей технологии и не обеспечивает революционного прироста потребительских качеств, которое в свое время обеспечила технология DVD по сравнению с VHS. <br /><br />Тем не менее, у Голливуда есть веское основание настойчиво продвигать Blu-ray — себестоимость дисков составляет $4-5, а их оптовая цена равна $17. Запах прибыли заставляет лагерь Blu-ray готовить очередной этап битвы за умы и кошельки покупателей, начало которого, по имеющимся данным, запланировано на средину года, когда появится оборудование, соответствующее спецификациям Blu-ray Profile 2.0. <br /><br />
