С появлением первых Ultra HD телевизоров возникла необходимость в расширении пропускной способности интерфейса HDMI 1.4 . Прежняя  версия, в действительности, не способна поддерживать передачу Ultra HD видео с кадровой частотой даже в 30 Гц. В связи с чем и возникла необходимость дальнейшего развития стандарта HDMI, представленного в новой версии 2.0. <br /><br />Полноценный HDMI 2.0 обеспечивает пропускную способность в 18 Гб/c. Способные обеспечить это микросхемы давно имеются, но только Panasonic использовал их в своих первых Ultra HD телевизорах. Японская компания с первых моделей Ultra HD телевизоров (это была серия WT600) обеспечила полноценную поддержку интерфейса HDMI 2.0. Другие производители ожидали появления специализированного чипсета от компании Silicon Image. Но он появился лишь в 2014 году, поэтому большая часть Ultra HD телевизоров образца 2014 года была разработана с поддержкой «проектного» варианта HDMI 2.0, то есть с ограниченной до 10,2 Гб/c пропускной способностью.<br /><br />Насколько заметно это различие с точки зрения пропускной способности? С HDMI 2.0, поддерживающим пропускную способность до 10.2 Гб/c, можно воспроизводить Ultra HD видео с частотой кадров до 60 Гц, в цветовом формате 4:2:0, до 8 бит. Поэтому данная версия не сможет реализовать все возможности Ultra HD Blu-ray дисков, которые доддерживают глубину цвета до 10 бит. <br />Другие ограничения возникнут при распространении видео с расширенным динамическим диапазоном (HDR) и с расширенным цветовым пространством (в Ultra HD Blu-ray оно расширится с BT.709 до BT.2020). <br /><br />Что означает большая глубина цвета? По существу это возможность воспроизводить большее количество оттенков цвета, с тем, чтобы показать более плавные переходы от одного цвета к другому. При глубине цвета в 8 бит вы будете замечать такие дефекты, как "цветные полосы», которые демонстрируют недостаточно плавные цветовые переходы. Однако, с поддержкой 10-битного цвета вы можете получить гораздо более мягкие переходы между цветами. Что особенно заметно по шкале оттенков серого цвета. <br />Очевидно, что предпочтительнее использовать телевизоры с 10-битными панелями, обладающие большей глубиной цвета (которые появятся среди модельного ряда телевизоров в 2015 году).
