Sony и Microsoft, как правило, проводят аппаратное обновление своих игровых консолей каждые два-три года, в основном, чтобы уменьшить размер и потребление энергии. Но Netflix считает, что они могли бы добавить возможности для приема сетевого видео в разрешении 4K и, в конечном счете 4K контента с HDR, о чем сообщал Forbes, а также Huffington Post.

Sony намекнула на возможность поддержки сетевого 4K видео вскоре после представления PlayStation 4. Но в настоящее время ни одна из двух новых игровых консолей не включает в себя чип HEVC, который используется для декодирования 4K видео. Декодирование HEVC возможно и с помощью программного обеспечения, но это не оптимально. Консоли также не хватает входа HDMI 2.0, который должен использоваться для подключения консолей к ультра HD телевизорам.

Тем не менее, ходят слухи, что аппаратная часть текущих консолей может быть обновлена для поддержки HEVC и HDMI 2.0, подобно тому, как Sony обновляла PlayStation 3 для поддержки 3D Blu-Ray через несколько лет после запуска.
