Во времена массового распространения кинескопных (CRT) телевизоров модели Sony были одними из лучших на рынке. Переход на плоскопанельные модели привел к крупным проблемам для этого японского производителя, который вынужден до сих пор сражаться с конкурентами за свое место на магазинных полках. С целью усовершенствования производства и сбыта телевизоров было создано подразделение Sony Visual Products, перед которым поставлена задачу вывести ТВ бизнес Sony в стадию устойчивого роста. <br /><br />В соответствии с заявлением Масаси Имамура, главы телевизионного подразделения, эта цель находится в пределах досягаемости. В ближайшем будущем Sony продолжит уделять особое внимание Ultra HD TV, приняв платформу Android в качестве основы для Smart TV.<br /><br />Имамура сообщил, что нет никаких намерений разработать собственную новую операционную систему. Слишком много трудностей и, конечно, слишком много ограничений в создании нового решения с нуля, с очевидными последствиями с точки зрения количества доступных приложений (одно из ограничений многих Smart TV. Новые улучшенные версии часто имеют ограничения по доступности контента).<br /><br />Имамура также косвенно ответил на вопросы об OLED телевизорах Sony, о давно циркулирующем слухе насчет возможной сделки с LG на поставку OLED панелей. Не подтвердив и не опровергнув эту версию, Имамура заявил, что "если это подходящая панельная  стратегии компании, Sony не исключает ее использование". Этакое «почти подтверждение", следовательно может предвещать появление договора на поставки панелей (не обязательно с LG, есть еще BOE - китайский производитель OLED панелей) для производства OLED телевизоров Sony.
