NHK демонстрировала прототип датчика для специалистов и прессы 27 мая на Open House 2014 в Японии.<br /><br />Для того, чтобы снимать 8K видео, необходим датчик с разрешением 7680 х 4320, с количеством точек около 33 млн.  Обычно используются три 33-мегапиксельных датчика изображения, потому что собираются по 33 мегапикселя  для каждого из основных цветов (красного, синего и зеленого). Однако, этот метод требует призмы, которая расщепляет свет на три цвета, что затрудняет уменьшение размера видеокамеры.<br /><br />Уменьшить размер камеры позволяет метод со съемом озображения каждого цвета с одного датчика. Но с помощью этого метода, трудно обеспечить качество изображения эквивалентное тому, которое дает использование трех датчиков изображения с призмой. <br /><br />Недавно разработанной КМОП датчик изображения с разрешением 133 млн. пикселей, что примерно в четыре раза больше, чем у обычного 33-мегапиксельного датчика изображения, позволит создавать высокачественные 8К камеры в компактном исполнении. <br /><br />Это так называемый полноразмерный 35 мм датчик. Площадь изображения составляет 37.6 мм (по горизонтали) х 21.2 мм (по вертикали). Количество пикселей 15360 (по горизонтали) х 8640 (по вертикали), расстояние между пикселями 2.45 мкм. Частота кадров до 60 Гц, разрешение  цвета 12 бит. Датчик выполнен на основе стандартного корпуса типа &#956;-PGA с 1125 контактами.
