Видео, cжатое с использованием VP9 требует вдвое меньшей пропускной способности канала связи или позволяет увеличивать качество передаваемого видео при сохранении прежней пропускной способности. Googlle уже договорилась о поддержке VP9 такими компаниями как Sony, Toshiba, Samsung, Panasonic, Philips, LG, и Sharp, а также с производителями полупроводниковых микросхем (чипов) Nvidia, Qualcomm, Intel, Marvell, MediaTek, RealTek, M-Star, и Broadcom. <br /><br />Ориентированный в первую очередь на использование в потоковых видеосервисах с поддержкой разрешения 4K (3840 х 2160 пикселей), VP9 позволит производителям видеотехники сократить буфер для приема  цифровых сигналов потокового 4K видео из онлайн-сервисов, а телезрители смогут использовать каналы с вдвое меньшей полосой пропускания.<br /><br />Телевизоры с поддержкой видеокодека VP9 от Google уже представили во время выставки CES в Лас-Вегасе, LG, Panasonic и Sony демонстрировали  потоковое 4K видео из YouTube. VP9 уже поддерживается в браузере Mozilla Firefox  и программном обеспечении Videolan.<br /><br />Разработанный при поддержке Международного союза электросвязи стандарт H.265, известный также ка HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) в данном случае конкурирует за расширение сферы своего влияния с VP9 Google. Хотя Gogle и заявляет, что ее формат не выступает конкурентом и скорее ориентирован лишь на прием потокового Ultra HD видео.
