Чтобы справиться с растущим спросом на материалы в Ultra HD, YouTube готовится к предстоящему потоку данных и объявляет, что будет использоваться разработанный Google кодек VP9. <br /><br />Кодек VP9 приходит на смену VP8, он создан в рамках усилий компании Google по созданию видео стандарта для Web, который не требует лицензирования, в отличие от HEVC. Кодек VP9 работает практически также эффективно, как лицензионной конкурент, имеет на 50 % сокращенный объем данных, по сравнению с VP8, и то же качество видеосигнала. <br /><br />По словам Мэтта Фроста ( представителя Google), речь не идет о конкуренции между двумя стандартами, а о следующем поколении технологий, только за счет улучшения технологий можно найти  лучшие решения для использования при передаче данных. Таким образом, VP9 только промежуточный вариант на пути к видеоформату будущего.<br /><br />По оценке Google, кодек H.265 HEVC превосходит VP9 по степени сжатия примерно на 1%, но с владельцев предприятий, разработчиков и с других пользователей, которые запускают проекты на H.265, могут потребовать выплаты лицензионных отчислений, причем суммы могут быть довольно существенными (Google заявляет о миллионах долларов с каждого). Компания Google включила поддержку инновационного видеокодека VP9 в браузер Chrome, пока в версии для разработчиков.
