Аватар 2 ожидается в кинотеатрах по всему миру, начиная с декабря 2016 года, а два других фильма появятся в широком прокате с декабре 2017 года и с 2018 года. Спецэффектами, как и в первом фильме, будет заниматься студия Weta Digital.<br /><br />Все новые фильмы будут сниматься кинокамерами в естественном формате 3D. На данный момент пока неизвестно, будет ли Кэмерон  использовать другие технические новшества, такие как повышенная частота до 48 или 60 кадров в секунду.<br /><br />Первый фильм Аватар  стал самым кассовым фильмом в мире, а также является самым продаваемым Blu-ray диском. Фильм получил множество наград на международных конкурсах, а также был номинирован на девять Оскаров, включая номинации Лучший фильм и Лучшую режиссуру,  выиграл Оскара за художественное оформление и визуальные эффекты в  кинематографии.<br /><br />Первый Аватар была задуман и создан Кэмероном,  от идеи до реализации прошло более десяти лет, потребовавшихся и на разработку технологии съемок, необходимой для реализации воображаемого виртуального мира в 3D кинотеатре нового типа.<br />
