Большие надежды сегодня возлагаются на Bly-ray диски нового поколения, которые смогут вмещать фильмы в 4К (Ultra HD) разрешении. Специальная группа, которая состоит из представителей Blu-Ray ассоциации (BDA), представителей киностудий, производителей бытовой электроники и компаний занятых в сфере медиа-технологий, надеются совместными усилиями разработать оптимальные требования к новому поколению Blu-ray плееров, решить по возможности проблемы совместимости со старым оборудованием. <br /><br />Обновленный формат потребует ряда изменений в стандартном Blu-Ray видео, используемом сегодня для распространения видео высокой четкости. Помимо увеличенного объема для хранения файлов в разрешении 4K должны быть приняты соглашения о кодеках, битрейте и цветовых стандартах, а также какие именно разрешения будут поддерживаться. В кино под 4K понимается 4096x2160 пикселей, в то время как в мире домашних развлечений и 4K, и UHD обозначения используются для описания телевидения в разрешении 3840x2160 пикселей (ровно в четыре раза больше стандартного кадра HD).<br /><br />Если удастся сформулировать общие требования к Blu-ray 4K в этом году, уже в 2014 году можно ожидать выпуска первых продуктов Blu-ray 4K.
