Но уже в ближайшем будущем американская компания Seagate обещает значительно увеличить емкости таких накопителей и достичь в течение 10 лет уровня 60 терабайт.<br />Поводом для такого оптимизма стало достижение исследовательского подразделения компании Seagate, сумевшее добиться плотности записываемых и сохраняемых данных 1 терабит на квадратный дюйм.<br /><br />Seagate заявляет, что исследователи достигли этого знаменательного уровня плотности данных с новой технологией записи, называемой тепловой магнитной записью (heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR)). В настоящее время жесткие диски используют технологию перпендикулярной магнитной записи (PMR), которая в 2006 году заменила метод продольной записи, этот метод использовался с момента появления жестких дисков для компьютеров в 1956 году.<br />
