Эра аналогового телевидения началась в Великобритании в августе 1932 года и закончится 24 октября 2012 года. Северная Ирландия останется последним местом, где можно еще будет посмотреть телепередачи с качеством аналогового сигнала. Все остальные, не имеющие цифровых телевизоров, жители королевства должны будут приобрести специальные приставки для приема цифрового эфирного телесигнала или смогут смотреть спутниковые и кабельные каналы в аналоговой форме. Хотя, конечно, подавляющее большинство телезрителей Великобритании уже давно смотрит только цифровые HDTV, тем не менее, есть и там еще люди со старыми телевизорами. Правительство выделяет миллионы фунтов, чтобы цифровое ТВ было доступно для людей с низкими доходами, пожилым, инвалидам и социально незащищенным слоям населения. Цифровое телевидение позволит донести во все отдаленные уголки британских островов расширенный набор телеканалов и новые виды услуг.

Переход на цифровое ТВ начался в одном из городов Великобритании в 2007 году с пилотного проекта. Затем с 2008 года шел процесс повсеместной постепенной замены аналоговой передающей аппаратуры на цифровую. Дополнительная выгода от перехода на «цифру» в том, что наряду с увеличением количества телеканалов освобождается часть спектра радиочастот, которая будет использована для развития высокоскоростных мобильных технологий и продана частным операторам.
