На выставке CES 2007 компания Hitachi продемонстрировала чтение 4-слойных BD-дисков с помощью... обычного Blu-ray привода. Диски состояли из слоев емкостью 25 Гб каждый, соответственно, общий объем накопителя составил 100 Гб. Сам 4-слойный носитель не особо удивил, уже ведь ранее создавались образцы Blu-ray дисков емкостью 100 Гб и тестовые образцы плееров, способные читать такие диски. А вот чтение 4-слойного диска на обычном BD-приводе уже интересно.

В демонстрации принимал участие оптический привод GBW-H10N, анонсированный еще в июле прошлого года предприятием Hitachi-LG Data Storage. Информация о том, кем был произведен сам 4-слойный диск, осталась в секрете - представители Hitachi наотрез отказались её разглашать. На этом диске на каждый слой нанесены цепочки питов одинаковой длины: 3T (3 пита) на нулевом слое L0, 4T – L1, 5T – L2, 6T – L3. На экране осциллографа, подсоединенном к приводу, зрители могли наблюдать изменение периода синусоиды в зависимости от считывающегося в данный момент слоя диска. Для перехода на другой слой подавалась команда с компьютера, что изменяло фокус линзы.

Для организации этого шоу, инженерам Hitachi пришлось поработать над программным обеспечением привода, а также внести незначительные изменения в оптическую систему устройства. Всё остальное осталось неизменным. О коммерциализации новой технологии пока ничего не говорится.
