Тайваньские источники сообщили о решении американского отделения компании Toshiba отказаться от демонстрации 55-дюймового SED-дисплея на выставке CES 2007, которая пройдёт в Лас-Вегасе с 8 по 11 января будущего года. Что стало поводом для такого решения, официальной стороной, к сожалению, не уточняется. Известно только, что причины бойкота не лежат в технической или коммерческой плоскости. Из приватных бесед с представителями индустриальных кругов стало ясно, что все проблемы возникли из-за судебной тяжбы между Nano-Proprietary и компанией Canon, причастной к созданию SED-дисплеев. В апреле 2005 года Nano-Proprietary подала в суд на Canon с иском о нарушении их патентного соглашения совместным предприятием Toshiba-Canon. Предполагалось до марта 2007 года закончить судебное разбирательство, но, судя по всему, до урегулирования конфликта пока далеко.

Напомним, что многообещающая технология SED (surface-conduction electron-emitter display, дисплей с электронной эмиссией на основе поверхностной проводимости) разработана компаниями Toshiba и Canon. Работы над новыми дисплеями были начаты в 1999 году. Заинтересовавшись SED, Toshiba вовсе потеряла интерес к плазменным телевизорам и позже сосредоточила свое внимание на новой технологии. Формирование изображения в SED-панелях основано, грубо говоря, на тех же принципах, что и в классических кинескопах - эмиссия электронов на фосфоресцентный слой внутренней поверхности экрана. В отличие от кинескопных телевизоров, в SED-дисплеях используется не одна, а целое множество электронных пушек, каждая из которых работает на отдельные пиксели.

SED Toshiba Canon

Разработчики заявляют о применении SED-технологии для создания плоских панелей с диагоналями выше 40 дюймов, толщиной несколько сантиметров, временем отклика пикселей меньше миллисекунды и широким углом обзора. Яркость, контрастность и качество цветопередачи SED-дисплеев должны быть сравнимы с показателями кинескопов. В то же время, новые дисплеи не требуют задней подсветки, а их энергопотребление в два раза ниже, чем у плазменных панелей сравнимого размера. Более того, Toshiba заявляет, что новые телевизоры на базе SED-панелей будут соответствовать требованиям Full HD и иметь разрешение 1920 x 1080 точек. Ранее шла речь о максимальной диагонали 50 дюймов, сейчас же разработчики говорят о том, что технология позволяет выпускать панели размером до 55 дюймов. Именно такой телевизор планировалось продемонстрировать на выставке CES 2007.

Массовое производство SED-телевизоров должно начаться с 40-дюймовых моделей. Правда, со сроками пока ничего не ясно. В лучшем случае первая фаза производства начнётся в июле 2007 года. Примерно в четвёртом квартале того же года ожидается готовая продукция. По сообщению Wall Street Journal, президент и CEO компании Toshiba Атсутоши Нишида (Atsutoshi Nishida) пообещал успеть с SED-телевизорами к летним олимпийским играм 2008 года в Пекине.

Несмотря на оптимизм разработчиков SED-панелей, многие аналитики скептически высказываются на тему перспектив альтернативной технологии. Главной причиной называется значительное падение цен на ЖК-телевизоры.
