Дело в том, что этот видеокодек зачастую используется для компрессии нелегальных копий фильмов и иных видеоматериалов. Киностудии не раз выдвигали против разработчиков кодека обвинения в попустительстве пиратству. Однако в последние годы DivX NetWorks стала уделять все больше внимания проблеме копирайта и в настоящее время активно сотрудничает с медиакомпаниями.<br /><br />Сейчас в США только около пяти процентов видеоплееров поддерживают технологию DivX. Впрочем, по мнению Гринхолла, уже в третьем квартале следующего года поддержка видеокодека будет реализована в каждом пятом плеере, продающемся в американских магазинах. Гринхолл отмечает, что отсутствие поддержки DivX в устройствах для Соединенных Штатов объясняется скорее инертностью рынка, нежели тем, что американская отрасль старается избегать технологии.<br /><br />В планы DivX NetWorks на ближайшее будущее входит продвижение новой версии кодека DivX HD, который обеспечивает возможность сжатия видеоряда с высоким качеством. Гринхолл считает, что технология DivX HD может стать альтернативой плеерам Blu-ray и HD DVD, которые в силу относительно высокой стоимости пока по карману не многим. Исполнительный директор DivX NetWorks надеется, что DivX HD получит распространение в странах Восточной Европы и Индии.<br /><br />В нынешнем году компания DivX NetWorks вышла на биржу. В сентябре стоимость акций DivX NetWorks составляла $16 и за три месяца выросла до $28.
