Очередной сценарий мирного окончания войны двух новых форматов оптических дисков Blu-ray и HD DVD предложила на днях компания New Medium Enterprises (NME), уже известная нам по попытке создания собственной альтернативы дискам высокой чёткости – HD VMD. По данным из неофициальных источников, инженерам NME якобы удалось разработать технологию доступного многослойного DVD-диска, позволяющего записать один и тот же фильм сразу в трёх форматах – Blu-ray, HD DVD и DVD.

Сообщается, что себестоимость производства одного такого универсального носителя будет составлять всего 9 центов, что лишь на 3 цента дороже по сравнению с обычными DVD. Конечно, в эту сумму не включены лицензионные отчисления сразу за три содержащиеся на диске версии записываемого фильма, а также стоимость соответствующего плеера (вероятно, новый универсальный формат не будет читаться обычными проигрывателями Blu-ray, HD DVD или DVD).
Любопытен также и тот факт, что нынешняя новость от компании NME поступила спустя всего неделю после того, как группа американских разработчиков из компании Warner сообщила о создании гибридного диска с двумя слоями для Blu-ray и HD DVD на одной стороне и отдельным DVD-слоем на другой (использовать разные стороны для Blu-ray/HD DVD и DVD инженеров вынудила несовместимость типов лазера у этих форматов). Однако, как заверили представители NME, никаких трений с американскими коллегами на этот счёт у них пока не возникало, поскольку если в Warner занимались разработкой непосредственно самого носителя, то New Medium Enterprises вела работы по созданию технологии его производства.
Не совсем понятным в этой ситуации остаётся лишь то, какая судьба в случае успешной реализации проекта по выпуску гибридных дисков ждёт другое детище NME – формат HD VMD, и зачем вообще компании, имеющей в своём арсенале собственного конкурента для HD DVD и Blu-ray, потребовалось заниматься объединением «вражеских» технологий.
К тому же, это не первая попытка создания мультиформатного многослойного оптического диска – совсем недавно аналогичную разработку совместно представили компании Memory-Tech Corporation и Toshiba Corporation.
