Много было сказано о намерениях Microsoft оснастить свое детище Xbox-360 приводом для дисков HD-DVD. Сначала компания раскрыла свои планы о выпуске в конце этого года внешнего проигрывателя HD-DVD для Xbox-360, позже появилась информация об обновленной версии игровой консоли со встроенным приводом нового формата, выпуск которой запланирован в следующем году. Изначально приставка в стандартной своей версии поставляется с простым DVD-приводом с поддержкой двухслойных дисков.
Несомненно, повод для радости у геймеров имеется. Однако огорчали слухи о стоимости внешнего устройства HD-DVD. Первые слухи доносили весть о 293 евро за привод в комплекте с двумя фильмами. Позже заговорили о более умеренных ценах. Понятно, что последнее веское слово – за Microsoft. И вот вчера компания расставила все точки над "i". Было официально объявлено, что продажи внешнего привода HD-DVD начнутся в середине ноября этого года. И более того, была названа стоимость новинки: для Северной Америки – 200 долларов, Великобритании - 130 фунтов, а на территории Франции и Германии рекомендованная цена составит 200 евро.

Microsoft высказалась на тему отношений с создателями фильма "Кинг Конг" и трилогии "Властелин колец". В результате сделки компания получила право комплектовать внешний привод HD-DVD копией фильма "Кинг Конг" на диске нового формата.

Нет сомнений в том, что компания готовится к встрече консоли Sony PlayStation 3, анонс которой запланирован на ноябрь. Достоверно известно, что PlayStation 3 будет оборудован оптическим приводом нового поколения Blu-ray.
В заключение хочется добавить несколько слов на тему популярности Xbox-360 в Японии. Не секрет, что продажи консоли Microsoft в этой стране достаточно скромные. Представитель Microsoft Такаши Сенсуи (Takashi Sensui), ответственный за Xbox в Японии, дал интервью сайту GamesIndustry.biz. Было сказано о консерватизме японских покупателей и их недоверии к иностранным брендам. Но несмотря на это и на скорое появление Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft верит в укрепление своих позиций и связывает свои надежды на выход нескольких популярнейших среди японских геймеров игр на платформе Xbox-360.
