Компании  Sony и  Panasonic представили новый формат для видео высокого разрешения - AVCHD (Advanced Video Coding High Definition).<br />Согласно новому формату, видео записывается на восьмисантиметровые mini-DVD диски, при этом кодируется с помощью кодека, основанного на MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, который поддерживает форматы 480i, 720p и 1080i/p. Кодек также поддерживает звук Dolby Digital 5.1 channel AC-3. AVCHD mini-DVD способны вместить около 20 минут видео высокого разрешения, но с использованием двухстронних двухслойных дисков это время может составить более часа. Напомним, что без использования кодека AVCHD, на стандартный mini-DVd помещается около 30 минут видео 480i. Существующие же HD-видеокамеры Sony используют MiniDV-картриджи, но Sony и Panasonic заявили, что уже разрабатывают устройства, записывающие видео, сжатые новым кодеком, на mini-DVD.
