Сюжет: Действие нового фильма режиссера Пола Томаса Андерсона разворачивается на рубеже веков во время нефтяного бума в Калифорнии. Главный герой – некий Дэниел Плейнвью (Дэниел Дей-Льюис), который собственными силами добился превращения из нищего шахтера, воспитывающего сына в одиночку – во властного и бескомпромиссного нефтяного магната. Однажды Плейнвью получает информацию о том, что на юго-западе штата есть небольшой город, где нефть буквально бьет ключом из-под земли. Они с сыном отправляются пытать счастье в запыленный Маленький Бостон, сонный городок на бесплодной земле. В этом захолустье жизнь теплится разве что в церкви харизматичного проповедника Илайи (Пол Дано). Плейнвью с сыном открывают новое месторождение, но когда им начинает сопутствовать удача, все меняется, и такие человеческие ценности, как любовь, надежда, вера, и даже отношения между отцом и сыном уступают место коррупции, обману и потокам нефти.
