Этот формат основан на применении лазера синего спектра и более чем на 90% состоит из технологий, используемых в HD DVD. Вероятно, это одна из причин, почему Toshiba не желает продавать патенты. <br /><br />По мнению источника, патенты HD DVD нужны производителям Blu-ray-дисков в переговорах по размеру лицензионных отчислений. <br />
