Японская компания Sanken Electric разработала новый тип флуоресцентных ламп с холодным катодом (CCFL), используемых для подсветки экранов в традиционных LCD телевизорах. Сегодня такие телевизоры занимают примерно 90% современного рынка продаж, но их теснят более экономичные и компактные LCD телевизоры с LED подсветкой. Разработка Sanken Electric способна продлить гегемонию телевизоров с ламповой подсветкой.

Новые лампы намного более энергоэффективны. Так, для экрана 32 дм телевизора требуется шесть традиционных и всего две новых лампы. В целом по энергоэффективности подсветка на новых лампах равны светодиодной, но по стоимости ламповая будет почти в два раза дешевле. Sanken планирует начать массовое производство новых CCFL в начале лета в Японии.

Компания разрабатывает также и новые светодиодные источниками подсветки, но считает, что для телевизоров нижнего ценового уровня ламповая подсветка будет более эффективна и в будущем.
