На проходящей в столице Японии – Токио – выставке Broadcast Equipment Exhibition 2009, компания Sony представила огромный трёхмерный ЖК-дисплей со светодиодной подсветкой, диагональ которого равна 280 дюймам (6,4 на 3,35 метра!). Стоит отметить, что этот «монстр» представляет собой не монолит, а состоит из семидесяти отдельных, специальным образом совмещённых 28-дюймовых ЖК-дисплеев. Эффект трёхмерности достигается за счёт применения соответствующих поляризационных очков, отвечающих за разделение двух подаваемых на экран изображений – отдельно для левого и правого глаза.

Кроме того, на выставке компанией Sony была представлена многоцелевая специализированная видеокамера HDC-P1 и хитрое приспособление, позволяющее установить рядом две таких камеры для получения в итоге стереоскопической «картинки».

Ожидается, что первые Blu-ray проигрыватели и телевизоры с поддержкой 3D появятся в продаже в Японии уже в 2010 году, но когда реально ожидать начала массовых телевизионных трансляций в новом формате, определённо ответить пока не представляется возможным. Известно лишь, что на данный момент в США некоторые каналы уже начали пробное вещание спортивных мероприятий и музыкальных программ в 3D. Что касается Sony, то компания явно делает ставку на трёхмерные технологии.
