Аналитическое агентство Gartner опубликовало отчёт, согласно которому, формат H.264 стал единоличным победителем в «войне кодеков» и в ближайшие годы весь видео-контент будет кодироваться именно в H.264 AVC. По их выкладкам, провайдеры цифрового спутникового телевидения и наземных кабельных сетей закончат переход на вещание в новом формате в течение следующих четырёх лет. Подобная стандартизация, по мнению аналитиков, позволит не распылять усилия в будущем, а целенаправленно «двигаться вперёд».

Кодек H.264 уже давно входит в спецификации ATSC, так что всё современное оборудование для просмотра спутникового или кабельного телевидения, а также Blu-ray и медиаплееры его поддерживают. Тем не менее, сложно себе представить, что весь парк видео аппаратуры, купленной за последние десять лет, будет полностью заменён в следующие четыре года. А именно это предполагают аналитики Gartner.
