Некоторые окружали стенды с дисками специальной пластиковой сеткой, некоторые прятали диски за стекло, другие держали диски за кассой, где доступ возможен только для сотрудников магазина. Все эти способы имели свои преимущества и недостатки, но не один из них не был идеальным. Начиная с 2010 года, магазины могут внедрить новую систему защиты, работающую по средствам радиоволн, открывающих доступ к диску только после его продажи.<br /><br />Entertainment Merchants Association предполагает, что розничные магазины смогут заработать до $6 миллионов в год, если решат использовать данную технологию. С помощью такой защиты диски с медиа  данными, как например, с играми, будет невозможно запустить, пока они не пройдут через сканнер в магазине. <br /><br />В попытке защитить себя от критики в том, что новая технология представляет собой очередной случай системы защиты авторских прав (DRM), вице президент ассоциации EMA заявил, что это как раз не тот случай. ‘’Данная технология не остановит людей от копирования авторских данных, а просто освободит магазины от краж’’.
