Британское издание Digital Spy сообщает, что британский регулятор рынка связи Ofcom подтвердил информацию о том, что к середине 2010 года в стране будет достаточно мощностей для запуска четвертого эфирного HD канала. Новые мощности станут доступны благодаря мультиплексу B, и вместе с Five, ITV, Channel 4, S4C и Teletext он будет пригоден для внедрения четвертого общественного сервиса HD.
Говоря о технической стороне, Ofcom предлагает три возможных варианта развития, при которых будут действовать сервисы на базе мультиплекса. Минимальная мощность 34Mб/сек, из которой 30Mб/сек выделяются для видеопотока; при средней мощности 36Mб/сек под видеопоток выделяется 32,3 Mб/сек; высокая мощность позволит выделить 36Mб/сек, но применение более эффективного аудиокодека HE-AAC обеспечит большее пространство для HD-видеопотока. Ofcom предполагает, что выбор повышенной мощности будет более вероятен.
Ofcom также сообщил, что «осуществление поддержки 4-го HD-сервиса на базе мультиплекса B с приемлемым качеством станет возможным до конца 2010 года при условии, что будут использоваться кодирование видео H.264 следующего поколения и оборудование статистического мультиплексирования, а также, что при запуске 4-го сервиса уже будет действовать стандарт DVB-T2, обеспечивающий скорость передачи свыше 34Mб/сек".
