В то время как некоторые компании предлагают плотность записи 128 ГБ на квадратный дюйм пластины, новая технология перпендикулярной записи с гигантским магнитным сопротивлением (CPP-GMR), разработанная компанией, позволит достигнуть планки в 1 ТБ на дюйм. Например, компьютер, оснащенный двумя дисками по 5 ТБ каждый, сможет запомнить такой же объем информации, какой накапливается в человеческом мозге в течение его жизни. Так же компьютер сможет «помнить» все, что происходило с ним за весь период его существования. <br /><br />Ранее Hitachi сообщала, что внедрение новой магниторезистивной технологии записи запланировано на будущий год, в течение которого компания планирует выпустить жесткие диски емкостью в 2,5 раза превышающую современные накопители: жесткие диски для настольных систем емкостью 2,5 ТБ и для ноутбуков емкостью 1,25 ТБ. <br /><br />В конце 2007 г. компания заявила, что в 2011 г. появятся жесткие диски емкостью 4 ТБ. <br /><br />Достигнуть к 2010 г. плотности записи 1 ТБ на квадратный дюйм намерена и другая компания – Fujitsu. Для этого она будет использовать анодированный алюминий, который «окружит» каждую ячейку на пластине и не даст их магнитному полю накладываться друг на друга и стирать информацию. <br />
