Прошел целый год с тех пор, как в прессе в последний раз упоминалось о разработке телевизионных FED панелей компанией Field Emission Technologies, 40% которой принадлежит Sony.

Так называемые FED дисплеи, или дисплеи с автоэлектронной эмиссией — это плоские панели, использующие эмиссионные катоды, которые бомбардируют фосфорное покрытие. В результате этого покрытие излучает свет. Толщина FED-дисплеев составляет всего несколько миллиметров.

Среди достоинств FED-дисплеев стоит отметить то, что в них не может быть битых пикселей, в отличие от LCD, даже если 20% эмиттеров электронов откажут функционировать. Данная технология наиболее близка по качеству изображения к лучевым экранам.

FED-дисплеи потребляют меньше энергии, чем стандартные LCD и плазменные панели. Кроме того, их производство намного дешевле из-за меньшего числа компонентов. Несмотря на то, что демонстрационные модели FED панелей уже были продемонстрированы, их производство пока не было налажено.

Со следующего года компания FET планирует начать массовое производство 26-дюймовых FED-панелей. 60-дюймовые телевизионные панели поступят в производство немного позднее.
