Один миллиард жестких дисков, поставленный компанией Seagate, вмещает порядка 79 млн. терабайт, что позволяет хранить 158 млрд. часов цифрового видео или 1,2 трлн. часов любимой музыки. <br /><br />Компания прогнозирует, что, хотя для поставки первого миллиарда винчестеров у компании ушло 29 лет, следующий миллиард она сможет поставить менее чем за 5 лет. Кроме того, когда ближайший конкурент компании поставит свой миллиардный накопитель, Seagate уже будет приближаться к отметке в 2 млрд. Свой первый жесткий диск - ST506 - компания Seagate выпустила в 1979 г. Он позволял хранить 5 МБ информации и стоил $1500, то есть 1 МБ оценивался в $300. Сейчас стандартный жесткий диск Seagate – это накопитель емкостью 1 ТБ, стоимость мегабайта в котором составляет всего 1/5000 цента. <br /><br />Выпуск миллиардного накопителя совпал со значительным ростом поставок жестких дисков. По данным компании Gartner, только за прошлый год поставки жестких дисков превысили 500 млн. единиц продукции. Для сравнения – в 1990 г. было поставлено чуть менее 30 млн. накопителей. <br />
