CanalSat был основан в 1992 г. и тогда назывался CanalSatellite. В начале 2007 г. было объявлено о слиянии двух каналов-конкурентов CanalSat и TPS. После того, как сделку одобрили антимонопольные органы, в марте 2007 г. был запущен новый CanalSat, сетка вещания которого значительно расширилась за счет привлечения других каналов (Teletoon, Piwi, TPS Star, Eurosport 2 и др.).
Новыми владельцами обновленного CanalSat являются компании Vivendi (65%), Lagardere (20%), TF1 (9.9%), M6 (5.1%).
Начиная с апреля 2006 г., Canal+ стал вводить вещание в HD-качестве для пользователей своего базового пакета (Le Bouquet).
С июня 2006 г. и CanalSat впервые запускает HD-вещание одного из своих каналов (National Geographic Channel HD), а в дальнейшем добавляет новые.
