По данным сайта PriceGrabber.com, в январе 2008 г. средняя стоимость десяти наиболее популярных Blu-ray-плееров составляла $467. В феврале, после того как Toshiba объявила о выходе из HD DVD-бизнеса, средняя стоимость Blu-ray-плееров прыгнула до отметки $604. <br /><br />Частично рост средней стоимости продукции был вызван выходом новых дорогих моделей, располагающих более широкими возможностями, чем обычно, говорит вице-президент по маркетингу PriceGrabber.com Даррен Девис (Darren Davis). Однако даже если этот фактор и не принимать во внимание, стоимость большинства плееров увеличилась на $20-50. По словам Дэвиса, фактически получается, что поражение HD DVD затягивает распространение Blu-ray ввиду увеличения цен на устройства данного формата. После ухода Warner на стороне HD DVD остались лишь две крупных кинокомпании из семи. Спустя некоторое время главный сторонник формата HD DVD, компания Toshiba сделала официальное заявление о том, что решила прекратить дальнейшую разработку, производство и продажи оборудования данного формата. Практически сразу же после этого последние две кинокомпании сообщили об отказе от HD DVD в пользу Blu-ray. <br /><br />За всю историю существования формата HD DVD в мире было продано около 1 млн HD DVD-устройств производства Toshiba.
