Спецификации, описывающие использование кодека HEVC для цифрового вещания DVB дополняют требования стандарта ETSI TS 101 154 (Правила кодирования видео и аудио для вещательных приложений на базе транспортного потока MPEG-2).<br /><br />Стандарт UHDTV Phase 1, официально принятый в мае 2012, описывает требования к так называемым 4K системам с чёткостью картинки 2160 линий (2160p). Следующее поколение стандарта UHDTV Уровень 2 описывает рекомендации для 8K систем с чёткостью видео 4320 линий (4320p). Основные требования к обоим версиям описаны в рекомендательном документе Rec. ITU-R BT.2020, где, среди прочего, определены форматы кадра: 7680 х 4320 точек для 8К и 3840 х 2160 точек для 4К при соотношении сторон 16:9. Кроме того, частоты обновления кадров прогрессивной развёртки могут принимать значения 120, 60, 50, 30, 25 и 24 кадра в секунду, а глубина цвета может достигать 10 бит и в перспективе даже 12 бит.<br /><br />Прежде всего, для телевизионного вещания в стандарте DVB-UHDTV Phase 1 со статическим изображением 3840 х 2160 точек (4К), что в четыре раза больше чем у нынешнего формата HDTV (1080p), на нынешнем этапе его внедрения и реализации скорость обновления кадров может достигать 60 изображений в секунду, при этом впечатляющее увеличение глубины цвета и контрастности будет достигнуто благодаря изначально заложенной в стандарт 10-битной глубине цвета на пиксель.<br /><br />Не менее важным стало более точное описание совокупности допустимых опций для кодека HEVC, который будет использоваться при кодировании и декодировании передач стандарта DVB-UHDTV. Отныне для вещания с качеством Ultra High Definition (2160 линий прогрессивной развёртки, 2160p) будет использоваться кодек HEVC исключительно основного 10 профиля (HEVC Main 10 profile) с уровнем 5.1 (Level 5.1), что на практике в совокупности означает частоту дискретизации 534,77376 МГц, максимальный размер кадра 8 912 896 пикселей и максимальную скорость потока до 40 Мбит/с. Для кодирования контента с традиционным разрешением HDTV (1080p) новый стандарт также предписывает использование кодека HEVC, однако в этом случае речь идёт лишь об  основном профиле (HEVC Main profile) с уровнем 4.1 (Level 4.1), что на практике означает максимальную частоту дискретизации 133,69344 МГц, максимальный размер кадра 2 228 224 пикселей и максимальный поток до 20 Мбит/с.<br /><br />Таким образом, уже сегодня можно абсолютно точно предсказать, что на следующей выставке CES 2015 в январе следующего года производители телевизионной техники порадуют нас новыми образцами продукции, оснащёнными тюнерами с поддержкой DVB-UHDTV Phase 1.  С технической стороны для этого нет никаких преград, тем более что на CES 2014 большинство из них уже показали, а в настоящее время уже продают UHD телевизоры с аппаратным декодированием 2160p кодеком HEVC со скоростью 60 кадров в секунду.
