Сегодня можно лишь заметить, что две предыдущие технологии, предназначенные для оживления телевизионного рынка, а это были 3D и Smart TV не дали ожидаемого эффекта. У массового покупателя по-прежнему нет особого интереса к виртуальной реальности в очках. А наделение телевизора теми дополнительными интеллектуальными функциями, которые есть в сегодняшних HDTV не всегда нужны покупателю. Многие предпочитают для доступа в интернет использовать внешние приставки или медиаплеер, в котором одновременно можно хранить и собственный медиа-контент. Возможность управлять телевизором с помощью голосовых команд или жестов нельзя назвать серьезной альтернативой традиционному ПДУ.<br /><br />Мешают развитию 3D дефицит качественно сделанных 3D фильмов. Изначальное отсутствие единых стандартов, универсальных подходов также негативно влияет на восприятие рынком новых технологий, хотя и позволяет производителям получать дополнительные прибыли, за счет тех же 3D очков затворного типа, когда не было для них единого стандарта.<br /><br />Ассоциация потребительской электроники (CEA) и Группа цифровых развлечений (Digital Entertainment Group - DEG), в работе которых участвуют представители крупнейших производителей телевизоров,  намерены совместно содействовать «плановому» освоению телевизионной Ultra HD технологии, известной также как 4K.<br /><br />UHD телевидение – это следующее поколение дисплейной технологии высокого разрешения. Информация для потребителя будет представлена в удобной форме, чтобы обеспечить наиболее адекватное восприятие Ultra HD и  тем самым помочь в расширении розничных продаж.<br /><br />Совместно с CEA, DEG будет работать со своими членами над расширением и совершенствованием технологических способов доставки 4K к домашнему экрану,  и обеспечить конкурентное развитие существующих 4К технологий.
