Завершена работа над техническими условиями (спецификацией) интерфейса USB 3.1, который стал логическим расширением спецификации USB 3.0, что обеспечивает удвоение пропускной способности, при сохранении прежних разъемов и обратной совместимости с USB 3.0 и USB 2.0.

Обновленная версия 3.1 обеспечивает пропускную способность 10 Гб/с. Удвоение пропускной способности получено благодаря совершенствованию алгоритмов кодирования данных. Новый стандарт USB 3.1 будет всегда использовать те же разъемы и кабели и будет обратно совместим с прежними версиями USB 3.0 и USB 2.0. Конечно, чтобы воспользоваться пропускной способностью до 10 Гбит - совместимостью с USB 3.1 должны обладать оба соединяемых устройства.

Новая спецификация стандарта USB 3.1 сейчас доступны для всех производителей чипсетов. В настоящее время Intel, HP, AMD и Texas Instruments разрабатывают новые микросхемы, совместимые с интерфейсом USB 3.1.
