По сообщению Korea Times, Apple не консультировалась с Samsung при разработке процессора A6 для нового iPhone 5, что указывает на ухудшение отношений между компаниями, долгое время тесно сотрудничавших в производстве компонентов для сборки гаджетов Apple.

Более того Apple после отказа от дисплеев Samsung уменьшает свою зависимость от поставок полупроводниковых компонентов Samsung на фоне активизации спора между компаниями по интеллектуальной собственности. Уже сокращены заказы чипов памяти, на очереди процессоры. Похоже, что Samsung теряет многомиллиардные заказы от Apple.

С начала 2000-х годов, компания Samsung в качестве основного производителя принимала участие в проектировании полупроводниковых чипов совместно с разработчиками Apple. Производственные технологии Samsung широко использовались для процессоров Apple A5 и A5X.

В качестве замены Samsung, судя по всему, выбрана тайваньская Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC), которая может получить текущие заказы Samsung (по истечении контракта корейского производителя с Apple), а в первом квартале 2014 года начнет производить процессоры Apple A7. В настоящее время TSMC налаживает производство чипов, в которых не задействованы патенты Samsung.

Напряженность отношений между компаниями повышает и переход из Samsung в Apple Джима Мергарда, который некоторое время поработал в Samsung в качестве ведущего разработчика микропроцессоров, а до этого 16 лет работал в американской компании AMD.
