Главной составляющей webOS является её графический интерфейс с рабочим столом, ярлыками, окнами и т. п. Благодаря этому, интерфейс webOS многофункционален, удобен и понятен сегодня подавляющему большинству пользователей.<br /><br />LG выбрала webOS, исходные коды которой в сентябре 2012 года компания Hewlett-Packard (HP) предоставила в свободной доступ. Таким образом, webOS, основанная на ядре Linux и предназначенная первоначально для смартфонов и планшетных компьютеров, теперь относится к разряду открытого программного обеспечения (как и Android). <br /><br />Изначально webOS была разработана компанией Palm и называлась Palm webOS. После поглощения Palm компанией HP, webOS  некоторое время поддерживалась только Hewlett-Packard. В webOS особое внимание уделено интеграции с социальными сетями и Web 2.0, а также многозадачности.
