В открытом доступе появилась инструкция по замене официальной прошивки на пиратскую, предоставляющую открытый доступ в сеть PSN и более свободное использование игровой консоли.<br /><br />Хакерам удалось получить криптографические ключи начального уровня, которые необходимы для контроля обновления. "Таким образом, каждый владелец приставки Sony Playstation 3, наконец-то, получает в полное распоряжение купленное устройство" и может устанавливать любую прошивку, любое ПО, как официальное, так и неофициальное.<br /><br />Пытаясь бороться с пиратством, в марте 2010 года Sony принудительно обновила прошивку на игровых консолях PS3, после чего пользователи не могли устанавливать альтернативные операционные системы, включая Linux. Этот шаг вызвал искреннее возмущение отдельной части покупателей,  многим эта функция была необходима не для игровых целей. Кое-кто специально купил PS3, чтобы установить на ней Linux для работы в сети распределенных вычислений. Даже американская армия приобрела около 2000 консолей PS3, но не для игр, а для экспериментального проекта распределенных вычислений.<br /><br />Честь «окончательного взлома» PS3 принадлежит хакерской группе Three Musketeers. Впрочем, история довольно мутная. Как заявляется на некоторых сайтах, Three Musketeers не хотели выкладывать в открытый доступ плоды своего труда (ключи к прошивке). К этому их просто вынудили, в связи с тем, что некая китайская компания Bluedisk смогла заполучить эти ключи и уже собиралась продавать.
