В конце 1990-х годов Международный Cоюз Электросвязи (МСЭ) определил значения параметров для телевидения высокого разрешения – HDTV. На своем заседании в мае 2012 года рабочая группа МСЭ сделала первый шаг в стандартизации новых форматов ультравысокого разрешения (UHDTV) 4K и 8K телевидения высокой четкости. Они строятся как кратные сегодняшнему 1080p, с тем чтобы упростить процессы масштабирования изображения.<br /> <br />Новые форматы предполагают использование в будущих дисплеях расширенной цветовой гаммы с возможностью кодирования постоянной цветовой яркости и смены изображения с частотой до 100/120 кадров в секунду. Одной из основных проблем для повсеместного внедрения новых форматов будет замена наземных и спутниковых систем  передачи телевизионного сигнала.
