Юджин Полли работал в компании Zenith Radio Corporation (сейчас Zenith Electronics, дочерняя компания LG Electronics) и предложил в 1955 году использовать для переключения каналов испускающее световые лучи устройство, которое направлялось на светочувствительные элементы по периметру экрана, активируя, таким образом, переключение каналов и регулировку громкости.
