Многие передовые производители полупроводниковых компонентов уже давно задумываются об использовании оптических технологий  не только для передачи данных в оптоволоконных системах, но и для замены световыми импульсами электронных цепей в полупроводниковых чипах.<br /><br />Повышение тактовых частот процессоров при практически уже невозможности еще большей минитюаризации приводит к повышенному энергопотреблению и тепловыделению. Размеры отдельных элементов чипов приближаются к молекулярному уровню.<br /><br />Оптические технологии могут легко решить проблемы минимизации энергопотребления и повышения тактовых частот. Свет движется быстрее электронов, т.к. практически не встречает сопротивления в отличие от электронов. <br /><br />Неудивительно, что одним из спонсоров новых разработок выступает компания Intel, которая одной из первых дошла до порога возможностей полупроводниковой электроники. Однако, даже о начале производства оптических чипов Intel ничего не сообщает.<br /><br />Между тем, в России еще в 2009 году «глава госкорпорации Анатолий Чубайс объявил, что «Роснано» намерена построить в России завод по производству оптических чипов с объемом продаж до 300—400 млн долл. По словам г-на Чубайса, с такой заявкой в «Роснано» обратилась неназванная американская компания.
