Аналоговое телевещание было одновременно прекращено почти по всей стране. Исключение на некоторое время сделано для пострадавших в недавней катастрофе префектур Ивате, Мияги и Фукусима. .<br /><br />Переход на «цифру» не стал для японцев неожиданностью, соотвествующая программа перехода законодательно была принята еще в 2001 году. К настоящему времени примерно 100 тысяч телевладельцев все же не успели приобрести соответствующие телеприемники, хотя замена телевизоров стимулировалась на правительственном уровне. <br /><br />Японский стандарт цифрового телевещания отличается от европейского DVB, называется ISDB (Integrated Service Digital Broadcasting) и внедряется также в Южной Америке (Бразилия) и экспериментально эксплуатируется на Филиппинах.
