Американская компания Nielsen объявила о том , что по ее оценкам, впервые за двадцать лет в США снизилось число домохозяйств с телевизорами. По прогнозу в 2012 году число таких домовладений понизится до 114 700 000 (96,7 %), по сравнению с 115 900 000 (98,9 %) в нынешнем году. Данные цифры могут свидетельствовать о закате эпохи телевидения.

Но стоит учесть и тот факт, что при исследовании не учитывались в качестве полноценных телевизоров те варианты использования HDTV, когда их владельцы смотрят по ним лишь DVD и Blu-ray диски, да потоковое видео из интернета, не имея ни эфирной, ни спутниковой антенны, ни подключения к кабельной сети.
