Первая попытка взлома была произведена в начале прошлого года неким Джорджем Хоцем, который двумя годами ранее прославился разблокировкой iPhone. Хоц рассказал людям, как с помощью паяльника и нехитрых манипуляций получить доступ к системе. Тогда Sony оперативно отреагировала и удалила функцию открывающую доступ через сторонние операционные системы.<br /><br />Однако в результате совместных усилий Хоца и хакеров из группы fail0verflow  стало известно, как заставить консоль выдавать секретные ключи для подписки приложений и запускать игры сторонних разработчиков. После чего в январе нынешнего года адвокаты компании подали иск в окружной суд штата Калифорния. Главным обвиняемым является Джорж Хоц, имена некоторых членов группы fail0verflow уже известны, других пытаются выявить. Sony требует компенсации нанесенного  компании ущерба, конфискации у Хоца компьютера и другого оборудования с помощью которого он может причинить еще больший ущерб компании, а также удаления из интернета информации о возможностях несанционированного использования PS3.<br /><br />Впрочем, сам Хоц отнесся к факту судебного преследования вполне спокойно. У него уже есть положительный опыт, взлом того же iPhone и установку сторонних приложений после судебного разбирательства в США разрешили. Обвинения со стороны Sony Хоц отвергает и даже протестует против того, чтобы его называли хакером.
