Консорциум SATA-IO опубликовал SATA 3.0 – новую спецификацию интерфейса, обеспечивающую максимальную скорость передачи данных 6 Гбит/с, вдвое выше по сравнению с SATA 2.

Спецификация была обнародована в августе 2008 г. С тех пор она дорабатывалась. Сейчас производители получили возможность использовать SATA 3 в коммерческих продуктах. Новый стандарт обратно совместим с существующими версиями SATA, но вместе с этим предлагает более удобный разъем для подключения компактных 1,8-дюймовых дисков и SSD. Улучшена передача мультимедийных файлов.

По словам аналитика IDC Джона Риднинга (John Rydning), новая спецификация укрепит SATA в роли основного интерфейса на рынке устройств хранения данных. По данным аналитиков, в период с 2001 по 2008 гг. в мире было продано 1,1 млрд жестких дисков с интерфейсом SATA. В прошлом году такие диски составили 98% всех продаж.
