Выпускник Ренсселарского политехнического института, штат Нью-Йорк, Пол Морроу (Paul Morrow) разработал новую технологию, благодаря которой емкость современных жестких дисков может быть существенно увеличена.

Морроу изобрел наноматериал, состоящий из поочередных наноколонн из магнитного кобальта и немагнитной меди, расположенных в трехмерном пространстве. Такой материал обладает хорошими магнитными свойствами и может использоваться для хранения данных. Вдобавок к новому материалу ученый изобрел сканирующий туннельный микроскоп, позволяющий изменять и измерять магнитное поле группы наноколонн.

«Структура материала является трехмерной, что позволяет значительно увеличить плотность записи данных, - рассказывает Морроу, сравнивая свое изобретение с современными жесткими дисками, где информация записывается в двумерной плоскости. – Стоимость винчестера с такой технологией будет меньше, как и размер, как и величина энергии, которую он потребляет». Разработанная ученым магнитная «наноголовка» (туннельный микроскоп) позволяет управлять магнитным полем десяти наноколонн за раз. До этого момента никто не мог создать технологию измерения магнитных свойств наномолекул с такой точностью. В настоящий момент Морроу работает над усовершенствованием головки, чтобы она могла работать с каждой наноколонной в отдельности.
