В эпоху безоговорочного господства AMD и NVIDIA на рынке дискретных игровых видеокарт выпуск графических чипов разработчиками второго эшелона кажется довольно рискованным шагом. Тем не менее, компания S3 Graphics, принадлежащая в настоящее время VIA Technologies, решилась на это. Её новая серия GPU Chrome 400 претендует на звание современных продуктов с передовыми характеристиками. По заявлению пресс-службы S3 Graphics, выполненные по 65-нм технологии видеочипы предназначены для создания энергоэффективных игровых настольных и мобильных компьютеров, обладающих наивысшим соотношением производительности и потребляемой мощности.<br /><br />В актив графических чипов из серии Chrome 400 записана унифицированная шейдерная архитектура, поддержка последней версии API DirectX 10.1 (Shader Model 4.1), совместимость с интерфейсом нового поколения PCI Express 2.0, аппаратное декодирование видео высокого разрешения в рамках технологии ChromotionHD 2.0. По данным разработчиков, продукты из серии Chrome 400 способны работать с HD-видео в различных форматах компрессии (H.264, MPEG-2/4, VC-1, WMV-HD, AVS) в разрешениях вплоть до Full HD 1080p.<br /><br /><div align="center"><img src="http://www.hdtv.ru/uploads/posts/2008-02/1203340747_198822.jpg" style="border: none;" alt='S3 Chrome 400: поддержка DirectX 10.1, PCI-E 2.0, Full HD' title='S3 Chrome 400: поддержка DirectX 10.1, PCI-E 2.0, Full HD' /></div><br /><br />Как и положено современным видеочипам, представители серии Chrome 400 оснащены интегрированным контроллером портов Dual-Link DVI и HDMI с поддержкой криптозащиты HDCP. Следует также отметить наличие функции PowerWise, которая гарантирует разумный баланс между быстродействием и уровнем энергопотребления видеоподсистемы. Благодаря технологии MultiChrome, собственной версии SLI/CrossFire, имеется возможность наращивать производительность за счёт совместной работы нескольких графических чипов в одной системе.<br /><br />Перечисленные характеристики вселяют надежду на то, что перед нами продукты с большим потенциалом и перспективой завоевать доверие у любителей 3D-игр. Однако данные о ширине шины памяти заставляет немедленно опуститься на землю. Безусловно, видеобуфер с 64-бит интерфейсом является признаком бюджетных решений, которые не могут похвастаться высоким быстродействием в 3D-приложениях. То же самое можно сказать о технике доступа к системной памяти AcceleRAM, имеющей много общего с турбо-технологиями AMD и NVIDIA.<br /><br />Остаётся добавить, что новые графические чипы S3 Graphics из серии Chrome 400 будут выпускаться на производственных мощностях компании Fujitsu. Первые готовые продукты должны появиться уже в конце текущего месяца.
