Сюжет: В аудитории, где искатель утраченных раритетов Бенджамин Гейтс рассказывает про Джона Уилкса Бута, убийцу американского президента Авраама Линкольна, а также про дневник Бута с недостающими страницами, неназванный слушатель производит настоящую сенсацию — показывает одну из пропавших страниц. В ней упомянут Томас Гейтс, прадед Бенджамина, что наводит на мысль о причастности Томаса к тому убийству. Бен не верит своим глазам, ему хочется доказать невиновность прадеда и тем самым восстановить репутацию собственной фамилии. Вскоре он узнает о засекреченном собрании документов под названием «Книга тайн» (многие даже не верят в ее существование, считая это мифом). Книга содержит все секреты нации, в том числе сведения о заговоре против Кеннеди и секретные материалы о полигоне «Зона 51». Доступ к сверхсекретной книге имеет только президент. Бенджамин решает любым путем добраться до нее, вплоть до похищения президента США.
