В апреле этого года компания Toshiba сообщала о готовности к выпуску первых коммерческих образцов телевизоров на базе OLED-технологии к 2009/10. На выставке Display 2007 представители компании даже продемонстрировали прототип 20.8-дюймового дисплея (на фото), показав публике, что прогресс в этом направлении имеется. Однако, как стало недавно известно, Toshiba неожиданно сделала шаг назад, объявив, что план выпуска таких устройств перенесен на неопределенное время. Вместо этого, Toshiba будет прилагать все усилия, чтобы внедрять OLED технологию в мобильные устройства. Что касается OLED-телевизоров с большими диагоналями, то «компания будет действовать по обстановке, и приступит к их выпуску при более благоприятных обстоятельствах на рынке», сказал представитель компании, Кейсуке Омори (Keisuke Ohmori).
"Органических" телевизоров не будет?

Косвенно преждевременность решительных шагов в этом направлении подтверждает и попытка другой японской корпорации. Как сообщалось ранее, компания Sony, один из крупнейших конкурентов Toshiba, уже приступила к продаже своего первого OLED телевизора с 11-дюймовым экраном в ноябре, правда, в очень ограниченных количествах (около 2 000 единиц). Причиной тому послужили высокие расходы, связанные с разработкой и производством устройства.

С другой стороны, по мнению многих производителей дисплеев и телевизоров, именно OLED технология послужит движущей силой для развития отрасли в ближайшие годы, так как именно эти панели смогут обеспечить более высокое качество изображения. При этом органические дисплеи имеют небольшую толщину из-за отсутствия системы подсветки, и потребляют намного меньше энергии по сравнению с ЖК-экранами. Самые сложные проблемы в производстве OLED-дисплеев связаны в первую очередь с изготовлением панелей больших размеров и их высокой стоимостью. Хотя еще недавно Toshiba планировала выпустить 30-дюймовый OLED телевизор к 2009 году, именно высокая стоимость производства привела к отказу от этого решения.
