Материал, выполненный на основе вариативных фотонных кристаллов (variable photonic crystals), способен контролировать изменения света в широком спектре, включая инфракрасный и ультрафиолетовый диапазоны. Сообщается, что структура кристаллов сходна с таковой у молекул релектина – белка входящего в состав клеток кожи кальмаров и осьминогов, ответственного за изменение ее цвета.<br /><br />Переменные фотонные кристаллы привлекали интерес исследователей во всем мире благодаря способности испускать или преломлять свет в зависимости от силы внешнего воздействия, что делает их для следующего поколения светоизлучающих материалов. В соответствии с заявлением ученых, лабораторные испытания переменных фотонных кристаллов выявили их 15-кратное превосходство в преломлении светового пучка, по сравнению с современными светоизлучающими материалами. Кроме того, несложная техника моделирования кристаллов, позволяет формировать из них модули различной формы.<br /><br />Исследователи полагают, что новый светопреломляющий материал найдет свое применение при разработке дисплеев, химических и биологических сенсоров, лазеров и оптоволоконного оборудования.
